The Season for Suicidal Bugs and Tree Sap

How to Keep Your Vehicle’s Finish and Paint Job Safe

By Jason Barker
There’s nothing like hitting the road for a Summer trip. And when you do, there are bug and other things that like nothing more than hitting your car, RV or boat. They’re gross and annoying when they decide to end it all when you’re driving by. They don’t seem like much, and you probably only notice about half of what lands on your car because you only see it through the windshield.

But bug splatter and globs of tree sap probably cause more damage to your car’s paint than any other source – and it can be permanent. The effects are slow but inevitable if you leave these nasties on your paint too long, especially during the hot summer months.

Dealing with Bug Splatter

Bug splatter is a necessary hazard of the road. Why do they pick YOUR car to end their life? Who knows, but if left uncleaned the result will be a permanent etch on your paint; small but permanent nonetheless. Over time these small bug-etchings accumulate to really make your car look shabby and will require your hood to be repainted. Regular hand washing is the cure. Don’t give those bugs time to etch your paint!

Dealing with Tree Sap

Those globs of tree sap sitting on your paint are slowly etching your paint just like bugs do. Get that tree sap removed as soon as you notice it, while it’s still soft if possible. Regular hand washing will not only keep your car clean but it allows you to notice when something foreign has taken up residence on your paint. Don’t let these foreign deposits to sit on your paint all winter long only to discover upon your first springtime wash that the damage is done and now you need a repaint job.

Summer road trips are a lot of fun and create great memories. The damage that they can do to the paint and finish of your vehicles can put a cloud over them, if you don’t jump on the issues right away. These tips should help you maintain the beauty of your vehicles… and your Summer time memories.
